HELLO!

Welcome back and we really hope you enjoy our little update!

the canary sail team

We have enjoyed a busy summer this year and wish to thank all of you who have supported us. You have choice during the summer months and your loyalty to Canary Sail and the team is much appreciated – thank you!
maisy the dog
We are very happy to introduce two new members to the Canary Sail family, one in the form of Richard French, who joins us as a Cruising Instructor and another (slightly more hairy!) in the form of Maisy…..a little Jack Russellish puppy. She is keeping Alex occupied and Jim's feet clean in the office, hopefully updates of Maisy's first voyage in the not too distant future!

Richard joins us after many years working as a skipper around the Canaries and we are very pleased and proud to have him as part of the team.

Big Dave passed his Yachtmaster Instructor. He joined Canary Sail with a Yachtmaster Ocean ticket some 3 years ago and consequently is now qualified to teach Yachtmaster Ocean Theory. We are all really pleased and hope to be offering these courses soon.

Clive has enjoyed preparing Yachtmaster candidates for their exams and taking on “Cruising Instructor” courses to cater for the growing demand from those wishing for a career change into the sailing profession.

Alex went regatta racing – more from her experience later in this edition, but our monthly local regattas are proving to be very popular with you all. We do hope we can welcome you over soon.

Alltogether a great season – thanks again to you all. We hope you enjoy this short update and happy sailing. Take care! Back to top

INTERVIEW WITH JANE

picture of jane in front of harbour

Dave – Hi Jane. Tell us what do you like most about living in Gomera?
Jane - Where to start?…it’s stunningly beautiful and hot and sunny but overall I would say it has to be the consistent and exhilarating wind.

Dave - What do you miss most from the UK?
Jane - Obviously friends and family but after that it’s probably crumpet! Interpret this in whatever way you wish but I’m not sure if you could fit this kind of crumpet into a toaster!

Dave – What does the next 12 months hold for you?
Jane - Without sounding pessimistic, my original plan to win the lottery and become and international poker player may not quite come together so I’ll settle for achieving yacht master instructor and being the regatta queen of Gomera! Given I’m normally the only female skipper who races out here I think my title is secure!

Dave – Why do you have the nickname Mrs Tweak?
Jane – You could call it obsessive compulsive disorder (in fact that is exactly what you do call it!) but I prefer to think of it as a passion for fine sail trim. All my crews come to love the constant tinkering and to date despite my demands I’ve never been threatened with a winch handle!

Dave – What has been your most embarrassing sailing event?
Jane – It would have to be being plastered all over canary television in one of our fancy dress regattas. In last minute desperation, Alex lent me her ‘Foxy Devil’ outfit which is to say the least revealing. Lets just say it was more than a comfortable fit!

Dave – Why do you work for Canary Sail?
Jane – Obviously my primary reason was so that I could share my working and domestic life with the world renound and infamous ‘Big Dave!’ Aside from that I chose to work for Canary Sail very specifically. There’s lots of places I could have worked but here you always feel looked after and genuinely part of the family whether staff or client. It’s an invisible undercurrent that defines this company. ALEX'S FIRST REGATTA

alex racing at the regatta

As some may know, I am not, what you might call, a “Natural Sailor”…..in fact, when some ten years ago, Clive uttered the immortal words to me, “know what babe, I want to start a sailing school….” I would happily have stuck my head in the oven and stayed there for a long period of time.

My reluctance was mainly due to my being plagued with severe sea sickness, or any kind of movement sickness for that matter. Sometimes walking too fast makes me a little green around the gills!

However, that was then and this is now!!! Click for full story

TRIVIA AND TIPS

Question:
Which whales are present around the Islands?

Answer: Sailing the Western Canary Islands, we have observed a pilot whale and calf number of whale species over the years. These include Dolphins, Pilot, Minke, Humpback and Sperm Whale. The largest we believe was a Fin Whale. Our estimation on size (it was very close!) was twice the boat length - some 60 to 70 ft. She was spotted swimming with her calf north of La Gomera.

The giant of the sea is the Blue Whale measuring up to 100ft long and weighing 200 tons! It feeds on “zooplankton” at the alarming rate of 2.5 tons a day!!!

Question: What is a “Yoke”?
Answer: Originally the wooden frame fitted to the neck of an Ox, a similar devise was fitted to the rudder post with “yoke lines” attached to control the ship’s steering. An early version of “autohelm” perhaps? Our friends in Ireland tell us that there, a “yoke” is the name for anything and everything!

Tip: Using an electric Windlass at anchor.
Whether alone at the anchor locker or with crew manning the remote control for the raising of the anchor ALWAYS place the controller on the deck before making any move to manhandle the anchor or chain. Back to top
CLIENT'S COLUMN

This song from Nicola Hollyman should be sung to the tune of 'My favourite things' from The sound of music starting at 'rain drops on roses and whiskers on kittens....'

Here goes....

Spinnaker, mainsails and jibs and genoas,
Jammers and winches and telltales and anchors,
Kickers and halyards and topping lifts too,
These are the terms of a Competent Crew!

On a broad reach or a close haul, when the going's tough,
I simply remember my two up, two down,
AND THEN I DON'T FEEL SO ROUGH!!!!!!!!

Thanks Nicola - looking forward to the next verse. Let us know something about your sailing trip or experience. It can be funny, it can be serious! Whatever you would like to share with us and our readers – let us know. Email Alex with your story. Back to top
