WELCOME to the first ever Canary Sail newsletter!

With fair winds and calm seas, we hope to bring you this little update every quarter! We want to let you know about forthcoming trips and ideas and hope to hear from you too. Some of you will remember that we were featured on the Channel 4 programme “No Going Back” in June 2004. A long time has passed since then and we are very pleased and proud to still be here operating Canary Sail! Clive is greyer, Ben is taller and Alex has finally stopped crying!!!! In October 2008, Canary Sail celebrated its fifth anniversary and we are very excited about the forthcoming months. We have a great team in place (see below!) and some brilliant ideas for cruises, training and shore-based holidays! So please read on and we really hope you enjoy it. We look forward to hearing from you and your contributions! Take care!

BIG DAVE'S LITTLE INTERVIEW

big Dave drinking from a tiny beer jug

Jim
– Hi Dave, thank you for coming in on your precious day off to talk to us. Please introduce yourself to those of our readers who haven’t yet met you.

Dave – No problem. My origins are Cumbria and I’m 36 years old. I moved here from the UK to teach sailing about 3 years ago. I guess I got sick of sheep! Now I’ve got the sailing, the sun…..and goats! (laughter from our audience)

Jim – So you are the “Baby” of the team. What made you leave the UK and is there anything you miss?

Dave – I always dreamt of becoming an Instructor and having sailing as a job. The only things I miss are Pork Pies and Guinness.

Jim – We understand that in your previous life you were a chartered accountant and Nigel was wondering why then you are always late with your expenses. (More laughter - including Dave)

Jim – What’s next for you? Any other plans this year?

Dave – Yes I will bring a boat down from the UK to Lanzarote this summer – Jane is my first mate……Then I want to work part time in Manolos bar…..

Jim – We all thought you already did! What is the highlight of your time with us at Canary Sail?

Dave – I’m still waiting for that! (big laugh)

Jim - You must have a “best and worst” story for us.

Dave Magee in a policeman's helmetDave – My best week so far was the week the students laughed at all my jokes- the worse event was falling into the marina dressed as a monk after the Easter Regatta Fancy Dress Race…..

Jim – Yes your jokes are infamous. Have you a joke for our readers?

Dave – What do you call an Italian with a rubber toe?.........Roberto! (Great groans!)

Jim – Can we expect to see you dressed as Santa again this Christmas?

Dave – Only if you are all good….

Jim – Thanks for your time Dave. Just finally I wondered whether you might have a question for me.

Dave – Yes I do – when’s the next pay rise?
(Uproar of laughter………. except Jim) Back to top

JIM'S FIRST FLOTILLA SAIL

Flotilla

Ready to Skipper a boat for the first time?
Don´t leave it to chance – Join us for a Flotilla Sail!

The 1st time I skippered a boat without an instructor on board was by chance. Circumstance left our party from Ireland landed in the Canaries with two boats, two crews but only one skipper! I had reached the “heady heights” of Day Skipper but had never taken responsibility of a boat unaccompanied by an Instructor. Our dilemma was discussed at length before I realised I might be ready. Following agreement from our “Lead Skipper” and my crew, I took dolphins jumpingthe plunge. I was very nervous to say the least. We sailed from Santa Cruz de Tenerife to Las Palmas and on to Puerto Mogan and Ageate on Gran Canaria and then back to Santa Cruz. What a fantastic week - other than getting caught in a “WAZ” with too much sail up! Under the wing of our lead boat “in company” and “in contact” we all experienced great sailing forming a bond with my crew with whom I remain amazingly good friends to this day. I gained a wealth of confidence that has lead to my YMI qualification and a teaching career with Canary Sail.

If reading this you feel you are ready, try a Flotilla Sail Week with us in the Western Canary Islands. This offer is open to Skippers, Watch Leaders, Mates of Watch and Crew ready to “Team Sail” a boat without the direct presence of an Instructor: The next step could be to Bareboat Charter with us! I hope you too gain that special confidence – Enjoy! Back to top

TRIVIA (and other stuff!)

Question - Why is the speed of a boat limited by its hull length? Answer – A displacement hull (i.e. not planing) creates its own bow wave. When the bow wave reaches a length equal to the hull length, the boat drops into the resulting trough and the angle of the hull to that wave increases. In effect, at maximum hull speed the boat is traveling “uphill” on the bow wave it creates thus limiting its speed through the water.

Question - Where did the term “heads” come from?
Answer – “HEADS” is the nautical term for lavatory on a boat. Originally the “beak head” was the area over the stem or bow of old ships where sailors “retired” to the “privy”. Grating served as the "flushing" system. Two such grates were provided (hence plural “heads”) in order for the sailors to choose the “Lee” option so as not to foul the bow…….(yuk!).

CLIENT'S COLUMN - Have your say!

David Yates writes - Having been a regular winter season visitor to CanarySail for a number of years, with impending retirement looming, I am looking forward to more sailing and a continuing relationship with the skippers who have endeavoured, often with frustrated weeping eyes and under breath cursing to improve my sailing skills. I have nonetheless enjoyed the verbal jousting and exchanges that have been taken in good spirit on 'both sides' with the following springing to mind:

Me: "Surely we dont need the engine, we can sail out of here [a crowded marina] on the genoa ? "
Skipper D: "OK, go for it but for God's sake dont tell Clive !" or Skipper J: "You have seen the Fred [hydrofoil] havent you ?"
Me: "It'll move over, it daren't run me over because Olsen couldn't afford the compensation when I sue" or
Skipper R: "You've only got half a metre [depth] left"
Me: "Don't worry, trust me, I'm a lawyer !"

I am looking forward to a renewal of the quasi-symbiotic relationship which exists but I suspect that when I book in most of the skippers will take leave and quit La Gomera for the week or draw straws......... Best wishes - David

Thank you David – Do give us warning (sorry notice) when you plan to return……! Let us know something about your sailing trip or experience. It can be funny, it can be serious! Whatever you would like to share with us and our readers – let us know email Alex with your story. Back to top
