Welcome to Our Summer Newsletter

A wonderfully busy summer season is upon us and we hope you have been enjoying your sailing wherever you may be!

Lots of exciting things are happening here at Canary Sail, with our new yachts now ready for training and charter.

We continue to run RYA courses all the way up to Cruising Instructor and by popular demand from those of you who have returned to us, we have also put together various different Blue Water Cruises including all of the Canaries, Madiera and Africa. For those of you that haven’t sailed with us before please do have a look at our video which we hope gives you an idea of what a weeks RYA training is like with Canary Sail on La Gomera.

With new yachts and busy times ahead, our team will be joined by new Instructors later this year. We look forward to introducing them to you.

We hope you can take a moment to read through our latest edition and we certainly hope to welcome you to La Gomera and Canary Sail soon!

Take care and best wishes,

Jim & the team

white rope Everything you ever wanted to know...

'Stinkpot' – Here in San Sebastian Marina, we are often asked by you our students and crew members why we refer to our neighbouring motor boats as 'Stinkpots'. (You know those floating vessels so sadly lacking a pole pointing skywards).

In days of old, a 'Stinkpot' was a chemical warfare bomb. It would be dropped or tossed on board an enemy ship and was actually an early version of tear gas shells – used to cause turmoil and distraction among the attacking boarding party. If you have ever been downwind of a twin diesel powered motor boat warming its engines…..well now you know!

More sailing? – One very enthusiastic member of the Canary Sail team has calculated, taking our boats mileage (average speed 5 knots) compared with its engine hours run, that the engine is run for as little as 5% of the total time aboard. Considering the fact that engine hours include all your mooring and boat handling training, that is an amazingly high proportion of sailing!!! Trivia but true!
