Welcome to Our Winter Newsletter
Where did that year go?
Thank you all for your support through a very busy year for Canary Sail. So many of you returned to La Gomera again - that gives us great encouragement and energy to continue delivering care and quality training.
Plenty of news for you this issue! We introduce new instructors to our team, new 2 and 3 day YM “Ocean” theory courses and new “Blue Water” Cruising routes which will take you, sextant in hand, beyond the Canary Islands for some serious, longer distance sailing.
We hope you enjoy this update and take this opportunity to wish you a prosperous New Year from all of us here at Canary Sail.
Happy New Year!

Emma's Story - Lucky What's It!
If you ever have a conversation with Jim in Cuba Libre, be careful, it might, forgive the cliche, change your life. In May 2009 I signed up for another holiday with Canary Sail, this time on a 'Seven Islands' cruise. On the final Thursday night I mentioned how much I'd love to join CS as an instructor. Jim suggested that I gain some more sailing experience ... full story here

EVENTS
San Sebastian Day - January Another date of interest for your diary is the week which includes the traditional celebration of San Sebastian Town – lots of traditional costume and music all congregating on the central Plaza! The sailing week is 14th to 21st January with Thursday 20th being the day (and evening) of celebrations – we still have space!
Carnival Special in Santa Cruz - March This year Canary Sail are planning to divert the course boats up to Santa Cruz, Tenerife for anyone interested in the worlds 2nd biggest Carnival Procession and celebrations (2nd only to Rio, Brazil which is the biggest!).
The sailing week of Carnival is 4th to 11th March with the procession taking place on Tuesday 8th. Join us for a week with a difference.
Easter Holidays - April Our sailing weeks 15th to 22nd April and 22nd to 29th April are the two Easter Holiday weeks. We are running courses as always on an exclusive boat basis for families or groups.
Canaries Day – May Once more we celebrate tradition Canaries style for this annual event. The boats will be underway as the music plays on Monday 30th May. Where ever you might dock there will be an opportunity to join in the fun if you wish. Sailing week Friday 27th May to Friday 3rd June.

Trivia
'The Power of a Winch! ' – We all teach students to load a winch with “at least” 3 turns around the drum. This increases the frictional force holding your sail sheet or your halyard to an acceptable degree of safety.
Remember your 3 turns! The force ratio increases from 6.6 with only 1 turn to 43 with 2 turns and amazingly to 284 with 3 turns! Powerful stuff!
'Friday Sail – Friday Fail! ' – Seamen of old believed it bad luck to set sail on a Friday – no doubt due to the crucifixion being on that day. No worries though – here at Canary Sail we turn our boats around on Friday with your course or cruise starting on Saturday.

Client's Corner
Further words of wisdom from Grant and crew.
To be sung to the tune of “Jerusalem”:
And did those yachts in ancient times,
Sail with Canary Sail Supreme.
And was the Holy lamb Madras
Better than chicken Korma with cream.
And did we see turtles, shark and Flipper
You bet we did while doing our Day Skipper
And was Jerusalem builded here
Whilst we were in Gomera drinking beer
Bring me my Bavaria with in-mast sail
Bring us the weather we desire.
Thank you to Clive and lets all hail
Let’s sail into the winds of fire.
I will not cease with Canary Sail
Nor shall my sheets sleep in my hand
I will return via Jerusalem
To La Gomera´s pleasant land
– thanks again boys!
