Welcome to our Winter 2012 Newsletter!
Welcome to our 8th edition of this quarterly newsletter from La Gomera. We have a number of items of news to share with you all. Firstly, Clive and Alex are moving out to Australia at the end of this month! After founding Canary Sail back in 2003, they have now decided to move on and I am sure you will all join us in wishing Clive, Alex, Ben and Maisy (the dog) all the very best for their future. Clive and Alex can be contacted at alex_moreham@hotmail.com As a result, Jim will take the “hot seat” and the sales role in direct contact with you, our customers. You will all agree that Alex´s role is a difficult act to follow and Jim is ready for and looks forward to the challenge. Please feel free to put Jim to the test! Jane Sudlow who joined as Chief Instructor back in October is now attending to all our Instructor training and boat safety needs, working together with Darrin and Jim in this all important role. We are also pleased to announce the arrival of Andreas Rudolphi as a new Instructor with Canary Sail. Andreas trained with Canary Sail over many years and has now given up the “Day Job” and committed to become a permanent resident Cruising Instructor with us. Richard van der Veen also joined for the winter season. Richard brings with him many years of experience with a passion for sail trim skills and racing. We offer a number of new Cruise options as always for this Diamond Jubilee year together with special “Boat Handling” training as requested by so many of you looking for that all important berthing practice! Keep a look out on our Special Offers page. Another busy year - thanks to you all for your continued support. We wish you all the very best for 2012, and if we can help with any of your sailing needs, we will be pleased to hear from you and welcome you to Canary Sail and the beautiful Island of La Gomera again soon. We normally deliver the RYA courses over 6 days rather than the minimum RYA recommended 5 days. So, the whole family can avail of training and certification with a Family activity “Day Off” thrown in (ie. Drive/Trek through the rain forest). Makes the sailing experience more of a holiday! Click here for more Trivia - The Nautical MileThe Nautical Mile - We are often asked why the nautical mile is different to the land mile. OK – once the land mile was established, it was impossible to use the same for the open sea due to the lack of reference points. A Frenchman, Gabriel Mouton arrived at the amazingly simple idea that, having accepted that the Earth was indeed round and not flat, the angles – or degrees and minutes of a circle could be used to grid the seas and provide coordinates. So, a minute of a degree thus became 1 nautical mile. Some substantial time later (1929 for everyone else and 1954 for the U.S.), an international agreement was reached that 1 nautical mile equals 1852 meters exactly. Client's CornerWe want you to join us here on La Gomera and we truly believe that you will have a fantastic time but don’t just take our word for it! “What a fantastic experience. Canary Sail are very, very good. One husband, one wife and two sons 20 and 24 with very mixed experience had a superb time sailing and learning. Emma our instructor was just first class and managed to get the best from us all during our week on the water. At the end of the week we had 2 x Day Skippers and 2 x Comp Crews and a proud family. Therefore a big thanks to Emma and everyone else at Canary Sail who made this possible. We will be back as Canary Sail are special as well as the great sailing conditions, lovely weather, perfect location, great food and drink, fantastic boat and very friendly, decent people. Thanks again. See you soon hopefully.”
